MoPEP debt soars - Lebanon Daily Record : Columnist One: "Lebanon entered a new phase in its 30-year obligation to its wholesale power provider – MoPEP – when half of the new Prairie State generating plant went online this week.
After a six-month delay, Unit One of two began production Wednesday in Illinois. In 2013, when the entire plant is to be operating, Prairie State will produce 1,600 megawatts of electricity for 2.5 million customers in eight states. Lebanon’s ratepayers are customers by virtue of our membership in the MoPEP power pool. We are captive customers, bound by contract to MoPEP as our only source.
When Lebanon joined MoPEP, the city took on a share of MoPEP’s gigantic debt. Lebanon’s debt is nearly $56 million. We owe the debt, plus the cost of power we will buy."
