Next phase of FutureGen 2.0 approved | Electric Power News | Energy Central: "The U.S. Department of Energy has given the go-ahead for the second phase of a clean-energy project known as FutureGen 2.0.

The initiative is a $1.65-billion public-private partnership to retrofit a power plant in Meredosia with a new coal-burning technique and pipe the emissions to an underground storage site in the northeastern part of Morgan County.

The second phase entails numerous areas of work, all of which must be successfully completed for the project to secure financing and begin construction, Department of Energy officials said. This includes securing necessary environmental permits and completing National Environmental Protection Act activities, conducting progressively more detailed engineering and design activities, executing power purchase agreements and acquiring all the necessary prerequisites in order to fully secure non-federal financing."
